If the last playoffs showed anything, it's that this guy is DONE.

If Gms are smart they will look beyond that. He's been below avg 3 of the past 4 years. He's 34 with 4 years left

But he's amazing when the right time comes.

You of all people should know how much that's important.

I wouldn't say max retention but maybe ''problematic contracts'' on other teams coming the other way .

In crunch times, Price is one of the best goalies in the NHL!

Because he went on one hot run that means he’s amazing when the time comes??

I guess then every team should be after Matt Murray then? Because he has really shown to be amazing when the time comes. Even more so than Price!

He has a 10.5 mill cap hit and a full NMC. Good luck.

These articles are more amusing than informative! So good to have humor in these dark days the NHL is facing!

Where would you even start with an analysis of who can afford Price, let alone wants him? 34, enormous AAV, and dealing with substance abuse issues: be still my heart.

I'm still old enough to remember when he was "absolutely" going to be selected by Seattle.

Price still regularly gets considered one of the best when the players are asked, so it isn't a talent issue at all. The challenge is and always has been that contract cost, and there are ways to mitigate that issue. Then the no trade, NMC, stuff is a hurdle.....but if all parties involved want to get it done.....never say never.

Unlike some responses, I don't find this as insane a suggestion as it might appear.
The real trick is:
a) Retention: How much would the Habs be willing to retain for the remaining term?
b) Return: Knowing that an at least short term deadwood contract would be coming in any deal, what else can the Habs expect to get in return?
c) Trade Partners: Who would really be in on a trade of this nature? Like some other discussed moves, I think this would require a third team to help reduce the cap. THat would mean even more assets going out from whoever is receiving Price.

This is all much more likely to be worked out in an offseason move - but that is just me. I think with the right team, Price can still be a difference maker. But he is not like Fleury who thrives on shots from all over. He thrives in a controlled system and I don't see Edmonton or Pittsburgh being willing to make the kind of systemic changes and investment of depth to make a deal.

Cary Price's numbers have been in a free fall since 2017. Barely a 900 save %. 34 years old with four more years @ 10.5M. Currently unavailable with off ice issues.

I am sure every team will be dying to trade for this guy

Goes to show leaving him unprotected for the Kracken wasn't some kind of savvy move. They were hoping he'd get taken. Habs knew something everyone else didn't at the time

Sure he can be amazing in the playoffs.

But what (playoff) teams can fit him under the CAP?
I guess it depends on how much Habs will swallow on the CAP and what assets they expect. A low retention would generate moderate assets at best.

People live in this pre-lockout CBA world where salaries don't matter and guys are freely traded without the consideration of a fixed budget. We're 15+ years removed from the implementation of the salary cap and people still just throw trade ideas out without considering the dinero.

Montreal would love to have Mantha if Washington sticks their toe in the trade waters.

Are these sources the same sources that have been spot on all year long?

and no poop he's going to be in play, I'm sure he's been in play but that contract won't get him moved..

you needed your "sources" to tell you this

Price has been poop for the past 6 years outside of a hot two month run.
What is classic is Habs fans over rating of their players.

Being "in play" is not the same as "will be traded."

Outside of McDavid, Crosby, Van Riemsdyk, and Matthews, everyone in the NHL is "in play" at the deadline.

for sure they are taking a poop contract back, its not like we are going to be good next year either so to me its very, doable / plausible.

Some teams would be scary with an healthy playoff Price, The leafs, the Oilers, the Avalanche
